people often proclaim that they are in control of their own destinies, yet when something happens that's outside the grasp of their abilities, they rationalize it by saying "things happen for a reason."
i find this grossly hypocritical. if you embrace one ideal, you detract the other.
you either deny fate, or surrender yourself to it, you don't do it selectively.
